Kim Cumming
Independant Celebrant

Well what can I say - I'm a people person!

My background is from 12 years in the Registration Service for Births, Death's and Marriages for England and Wales, prior to which I spent 20 years in the hotel industry covering conferencing and banqueting. I have planned, organised and managed hundreds if not thousands, of events of all kinds.

I take great personal and professional pride in providing ceremonies personally designed for your individual event, making the day you want and need. Whether it be a Marriage celebration or a Celebration of Life for a loved one, I write ceremonies filed with memories, tears and a touch of humour in life changing moments - never forgetting that I'm privileged to be invited into your family on such momentous occasions.

Weddings

Did you know there's a difference between a marriage and wedding?
A marriage is a legal requirement, recognised in law, whereas a wedding is a celebration!

Well firstly, Congratulations! You've found 'the one' and now it's time to arrange your special day, filled with love, family, romance......... and fun.

Over the years as a Registrar I realised, understandably, that people wanted to have much more input into their ceremonies; to include more personal touches and details to make the ceremony personal and unique to them.

As a Wedding Celebrant in Milton Keynes, the two biggest advantages of having a Celebrant led ceremony are the unique, personally designed ceremonies that I can provide, written just for you as a couple. Also, that the venue you choose does not have to be licensed and you can choose to have your ceremony  in or outside - in a marquee, a hotel, by a lake, on the beach or in a forest - the choice is yours........and the locations are endless!

Whether it be traditional, relaxed, formal, intimate or grand – I want to get to know you and design a ceremony that ‘fits’ you as individuals and couples.

I can provide support and advice on choices available to you and take on board any suggestions or ideas that you’d like to include to make your dream ceremony become a reality. Most importantly I want you to have fun and make memories that last a lifetime.

IMPORTANT - An Independent Celebrant cannot perform a legally recognised marriage ceremony. A marriage certificate must be obtained from the local Register Office prior to the celebration ceremony. Usually, a Register Office will perform a small but elegant ceremony with just the couple and two witnesses for £140.00,  including the legal preliminaries. Hand Fasting

In Europe, until the mid 1700s, few unions were sanctified in a church. Rather they were celebrated by a simple Hand Fasting ceremony in which the two partners joined hands over the village anvil in the fields, or in the groves of trees.
The couple would link hands to form an infinite circle, and then, their hands or wrists would be bound together, symbolising the binding together of the two lives into one.
It is from this practice that the expression ‘tying the knot’ comes from.

As a Hand Fasting Celebrant in Milton Keynes, the two biggest advantages of having a Celebrant led ceremony are the unique, personally designed ceremonies that I can provide, written just for you as a couple. Also, that the venue you choose does not have to be licensed and you can choose to have your ceremony  in or outside (weather permitting!) - in a marquee, a hotel, by a lake, on the beach or in a forest - the choice is yours........and the locations are endless! You just need the permission of the land owner.

I can either design an entire ceremony based on the tradition of hand fasting, to include the elements - Earth, Air, Fire and Water, or as an internal ceremony - a part of your overall modern, yet traditional wedding.
I can provide support and advice on choices available to you and take on board any suggestions or ideas that you’d like to include to make your dream ceremony become a reality. Most importantly I want you to have fun and make memories that last a lifetime.

Baby Naming

"A gift beyond measure.

A wonder to hold.
And a lifetime to treasure."

If you're thinking about a Naming Ceremony then you've already decided a traditional religious Christening is not for you but this is a huge occasion in your lives, whether it's your first, second or third baby and you want to mark the occasion and celebrate!

The arrival of a new baby into a family is not just about sleepless nights and nappies - its never ending, pure, unconditional love and Naming Ceremonies are a way of welcoming your child into your family, establishing your childs identity by giving them their name and involving family and friends, asking for their continued love and support in raising your child. It's a celebration of a new beginning, promises and hopes for the future...........and maybe a great family party afterward with bubbly.

But a naming ceremony isn't just for babies. It's ideal for families who have adopted a child or where siblings are coming together further to a marriage and want to celebrate their unity, strengthening their bond.

As a Naming Celebrant in Milton Keynes, every ceremony I conduct is unique and I'm happy to make suggestions and provide guidance in making your celebration special. You may have already been to a Naming Ceremony or have a few ideas of your own but you could consider including:

  • The story behind the name you've chosen.
  • Including readings, music or internal ceremonies - like a sand ceremony
  • Promises made by the 'supporting adults' (God parents)
  • Promises made by the parents
  • A gift to your child
  • Including siblings and grand parents in the ceremony

Renewal of Vows

Image

There comes a time in our relationship when we look back with love, happiness, pride, gratitude and realise we have so much to be grateful for and we want to celebrate it!
There are many reasons you may want to renew your vows. Perhaps you didn't have the wedding you dreamed of all those years ago. It maybe that the two of you have been through something traumatic, maybe a serious illness, or, after many years together, you have a special anniversary approaching and want to commemorate it, be it 1 year or 60!
Marriage is to be celebrated - a Renewal of Vows ceremony is your story together, your journey, love, commitment, teamwork, patience and achievements.
What ever your reasons, a Renewal of Vows ceremony is a chance to reaffirm your vows and commitment to one another and your continued future as a couple.

As a Celebrant in Milton Keynes, the two biggest advantages of having a Celebrant led ceremony are the unique, personally designed ceremonies that I can provide, written just for you as a couple. Funerals

One of the hardest things we have to do in life is to say a final goodbye to a loved one.  It's a time of sadness and outpouring of grief but it's also a time to celebrate the life of your loved one.

As a Funeral Celebrant in Milton Keynes I understand that this is your final act of love and has to be right for you and your family.  I will work closely with you to write an individual service to provide a dignified and celebratory ceremony worthy of your loved one.

I'm not affiliated to any religious faith so can provide a ceremony which is either religious, non religious or a little of both.
I'll make arrangements to visit with you at a venue of your choice to get to know you, your family and loved one - where they were born and raised, their interests, their family, friendships, personal achievements, their sense of humour. I can include anecdotes, their likes and dislikes and I'm happy to follow any requests around personal touches - such as a colour theme or toast during the service. You may wish to have family and close friends take part in the service, by way of readings, music or personal tributes.

This is a very personal and life changing moment in time and my sole aim is to give your loved one a farewell service they deserve by creating a ceremony which is appropriate to them.

"Grief and love are forever entwined
Grief is the terrible reminder of the depths of our love and it's non negotiable
There is a vastness of grief that overwhelms our very being."

Nick Cave - Musician

But would we be without it? - our life would not be the same if our loved one had not been present in it and so, in my opinion, although we shed tears, we should celebrate their life and our joy of having had them in our lives.
